Forschungszentrum Dresden-Rossendorf (FZD)

Friday, October 23, 2009 | 9:00 - 12:00
incl. in the registration fee

A tour to the MHD laboratories and the Dresden High Magnetic field laboratory at FZD will be offered for all participants (and accompanying persons) of EPM2009 on Friday, October 23, between 9 a.m. and 12 a.m. A bus transfer to the research centre will be organized.

The Forschungszentrum Dresden-Rossendorf FZD is a member of the Leibniz Science Association and is engaged in basic and application oriented research. The campus with buildings and research facilities extends over an area of about 186 ha at the Northeastern outskirts of Dresden. Currently, the staff of the FZD comprises about 750 persons.

The MHD Department belongs to the Institute of Safety Research and involves about 30 co-workers. Model experiments with low melting point liquid metals are a key issue of our research activities because such an approach has been verified as an important tool to investigate the flow structure and related transport processes in melt flows being relevant for applications in metallurgy, metal casting or crystal growth.
During the lab tour we will present our experimental facilities and the measuring techniques for the characterization of liquid metal flows, for instance:

• Continuous Casting Liquid Metal Model (CONCAST)
• Magnetic stirring systems (MULTIMAG)
• Liquid Metal loops (sodium, lead,…)
• Electrochemical laboratory
• Measuring techniques (UDV, electromagnetic flow meter, CIFT, X-ray radioscopy)
